For those of you that know me, you know that I was enamoured with Ozzy Osbourne growing up. I’m 35 and born in 1987, the year that my favourite album of all time was released – No Rest for the Wicked – and it was an absolute Stormer of a statement with Zakk Wylde not so much “Bursting on the scene” as much as the audible equivalent of smashing your door in, grabbing you by the ears and shaking your face off, literally with the FACE MELTING guitar virtuosity he demonstrated with the technical precision of Seal Team 6.

Okay, so Zakk Wylde can tame, conquer and destroy the guitar, so what’s your point, Matt?

This is where maturity comes into play. You might have noticed that the year is not 1987, but 2022! It could be said that whilst Zakk Wylde most certainly has the most aggressive vibrato, mixed with tenacious bends, pinched harmonics and just pure in-your-face audio assault sound I believe possible to attain with basic chops (no adaptations/specialized equipment) that he can also deliver a soft, melancholic tone which, is pure heavenly bliss to my ears!

Dude, Zakk Wylde is just a SHREDDER, why Should I Take Your word for it?

This is a huge misconception in my humble opinion. We’ve already established that Zakk does what Zakk does, and does it really well! So well in fact that I would suggest to my students that if they want to learn how to use pick angles, linear attack in relation to the pickups and bridge, heavy-handedness and tone when it comes to Vibrato, Double Stops, Pinched Harmonics then definitely listen and watch Zakk Wylde play. See how he fluidly uses his hands to subtle effects with palm mutes, deadening etc.

Okay, Okay So What is Your Point!?

My point is, take a listen to this iteration of Nothing Feels Right. Use your listening skills to follow the song and try to pick up on those subtle tone changes which accentuate certain sections of the song. Of course, the song is Kick-Ass and it helps that Ozzy Osbourne is such a DON when it comes to vocal delivery. Bonus points if you can work out how Zakk Wylde is using his Wah-Wah pedal to add to his repertoire of tricks.
