Update: Disabling Comments on Blog Posts

Dear Readers,

I hope this message finds you well. I want to take a moment to share an important update regarding the comments section on my blog. After much consideration, I have decided to disable comments on all posts moving forward. This decision has not been made lightly, but it is necessary for several reasons, especially in light of the new Ofcom Online Safety Bill 2023.

As many of you may be aware, the Online Safety Bill introduces new regulatory responsibilities for content creators and businesses operating online. While I wholeheartedly support creating a safer online environment, the vague nature of some descriptions within this legislation presents significant challenges for someone in my position. As a small business owner running this blog on my own, navigating compliance amidst these ambiguities can be daunting. The penalties for non-compliance include substantial fines and, in severe cases, permanent bans from certain platforms, which could jeopardize the future of my business.

On top of the regulatory concerns, I also need to consider the risks posed by cybercriminals, hackers, and individuals with malicious intent. There is always the potential for these actors to exploit an open comments section, threatening to post non-compliant material or otherwise engage in extortion tactics. The risk of dealing with such individuals is a reality in today’s digital landscape, and it heightens my responsibility to protect both my business and my audience from any harmful repercussions.

Moderation has therefore become an overwhelming task, particularly when considering the volume of comments that can arise, often comprising diverse opinions and expressions. As much as I enjoy engaging with you and fostering discussions around the topics shared on this blog, I must prioritize the legal obligations and risks associated with public commentary. In a digital age where the landscape is ever-evolving, it is crucial that I ensure compliance with all regulations while maintaining the integrity of my business.

Given the vague descriptions of what constitutes compliant or non-compliant content, as well as the potential threats from those looking to exploit vulnerabilities, I have found it necessary to disable comments. This will allow me to focus on providing valuable articles and insights that matter most to you without the added pressure of constant moderation and security risks.

In lieu of the comments section, I encourage you to connect with me through my social media platforms or via email. I value your thoughts and would love to hear from you in those spaces, where I can maintain a more controlled environment for discussion.

Thank you for your continued support as I adapt my approach to blogging in accordance with these new regulations. Your understanding is greatly appreciated, and I look forward to sharing more content that inspires and informs you.

Warm regards,

Matt Gwinnut
